Minu hinnang on, et kui lääne toetus Ukrainale ei suurene, kiirene ega anna võimalust kasutada lääne raketisüsteeme Venemaa pinnal, siis oleme seda sõda kaotamas. Kahetsusväärselt on Euroopa Parlamendi saalis kõlanud mõningate saadikute poolt sõnad, et selles sõjas on süüdi Ukraina ja ülistatakse Viktor Orbani “rahuplaani”. Sellistel sõnadel ja mõtetel pole minu arvates Euroopa Liidus kohta. Kui me ELi liikmesriikidena kokku ei hoia, siis Ukraina ei pea vastu. Aga seda me ei saa lasta juhtuda. Hääletasin resolutsiooni poolt.

Viimasel ajal on tõsistes üleujutustes eriti rängalt kannatada saanud Austria, Tšehhi, Ungari, Poola, Rumeenia ja Slovakkia, samuti on metsa- ja maastikupõlengud tabanud Kreekat ja Portugali. Paljud inimesed on kaotanud oma kodud ning kahjuks on ka hukkunuid. Kõik see tuletab meile meelde looduse jõudu ja seda, kui oluline on valmistuda üha ettearvamatuteks ilmastikuoludeks. Need üleujutused ei ole üksikud sündmused – need on osa järjest suurenevast äärmuslike ilmastikunähtuste mustrist, mida põhjustavad kliimamuutused. Kaasnenud tervise- ja keskkonnamõjud on tõsised ja tagajärjed kestavad kaua. Euroopa Parlamendi ja PPE fraktsiooni liikmena toetan meetmeid, mis tugevdavad Euroopa Liidu kollektiivset vastust sellistele kriisidele. Tuleb tegutseda, et tsiviilkaitsevõimekus oleks tugev ja taristu moderniseeritud, ning tagada, et katastroofi piirkonnad saaksid vajaliku rahastuse. Samuti on üheks oluliseks valdkonnaks varajase hoiatamise süsteemi täiustamine, mis võib päästa elusid, andes inimestele aega selliste katastroofide eest ettevalmistamiseks. Toetan tugevalt EL-i solidaarsusfondi kiiremat kasutuselevõttu, et saaksime aidata kaasa taristu taastamisele mõjutatud piirkondades. Aeg on otsustav – tuleb vähendada bürokraatlikke takistusi, et taastumisprotsess oleks võimalikult kiire. Hääletasin resolutsiooni poolt.
